The Weekend Golfer

I saw an ad with Jack Nicklaus talking about "moving forward" on the golf course.  His contention was for the casual golfer to play from the "gold" tees to score better and to speed up the game.  Not a bad idea really but some of us still like the challenge presented by the white tees.  We don't like how we score, especially if you are as bad as I am on the golf course.

Well I had a different idea re: scoring

The USGA should change "par" for the average golfer and the average golfer should start scoring themselves like you score in a scramble.  Par for the casual golfer should be changed to 4, 5 and 6, making par for the course 90.

On the scorecard the player then places is score as -2 -1 0 1 2 like you would in a scramble.  You don't count total strokes.  You count your score relative to par.  For most players 90 really is par even with today's equipment.  You might get the average golfer to then count all his strokes against par.  The only person that tells more lies than a fisherman is a golfer.  Lots of strokes don't get counted.  If we apply how we score differently against an easier goal (par) it might make the game a little more fun.
